Maths is Everywhere
Running time: 60 minutes
Research has shown that children acquire their basic mathematical understandings before the age of eight and that early maths ability is highly predictive of later academic ability.

However, New Zealand’s international standing for mathematics achievement has been dropping over the past two decades. In its 2016 publication Early mathematics: A guide for improving teaching and learning, ERO identified that low levels of mathematical content knowledge and confidence results in many teachers missing opportunities (and sometimes actively avoiding them) to engage children in mathematical learning.
This webinar uses the He Kakano model to examine the key components of mathematics and provides a range of strategies, key concepts and examples to support teacher practice and confidence.

We will examine how the concepts of patterning, measuring, locating, sorting, counting and shape can be linked into existing curriculum experiences and introduced intentionally by teachers in everyday ways.
